Pet Safety Tips

In recent years, Houston has witnessed severe weather conditions and natural calamities that have left numerous pets abandoned or displaced. At AirCon Service Company, we believe that pets are family. Our team even has our own CBO, or Chief Barking Officer named Jack. A four-year-old pit bull terrier mix, Jack is not just our company mascot, but a great source of joy and comfort to each of our employees as well as customers. We can’t imagine life without Jack in it, which is why we always include him in all our plans including any emergency preparedness plans.

Check out the safety tips below to help you and your pets be prepared for any emergency:

  • Make a plan- Be prepared and map out a plan for any type of emergencies that you can initiate at a moment’s notice. Do your research in terms of available pet-friendly evacuation places or pet boarding during emergencies. Make sure your pet is ready as well by keeping their shots updated and having them microchipped. As soon as you have a well-thought-out plan, learn it by heart and stick to it.
  • Practice makes perfect- The only way to know if you have a feasible plan is through practice. Simulate an emergency drill with your pet and go through every step. Assign a leader that you can follow without question to ensure that the plan will not change.
  • Get your kit on- A pet’s emergency kit is no different from yours. Make sure that you prepare at least three days’ worth of food and water. Include a can opener if needed and store them in waterproof containers. If your pet is on medication, store just enough to get you through the storm. You may also want to bring a crate, extra leash and a picture of your pet just to be sure.
  • Going out- If you need to evacuate, make sure that you know a place that takes in pets. We suggest that you put all essentials in a backpack so you can assist your pet more easily. Keep your pets on a leash or in a crate when evacuating with them. You may also want to call your vet ahead of time to secure health records and proof of vaccinations.
  • Staying in- If you decide to stay at home and wait out the storm, make sure that you have enough food, water, and/or medications. You may want to designate a “safety room” where you can take shelter with your pet along with all supplies. However, just make sure that your “safe room” is free from any toxic materials, unsafe areas, or openings.
  • Onboarding your boarding plans- In case you can’t find an evacuation place that takes pets, you may want to look for safe boarding places instead. This may be a reputable pet hotel or vet office that is away from the storm’s path. This may also be a trusted friend who’s familiar with your pet and vice versa that can take your pet in.
  • Keep calm- No matter what your specific plans are when a natural calamity strikes, always stay calm. Remember, your pets can sense what you’re feeling and can pick up from that. Panicking can also only lead to you forgetting important aspects of the plan. Be prepared as well for any changes in your pet’s behavior in the next days. The important thing is to be patient with them and strive to get them back to their normal routine as soon as possible.

Bay Area Turning Point

AirCon Service Company wants every woman, every child, and every man to feel safe and loved in their own homes. That is why we have partnered with Bay Area Turning Point Inc. (BATP) in their mission of helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Together with the social service organization from Webster, Texas, we strive to provide recovery services and facilitate violence prevention strategies throughout the local community. In fact, several members of our Houston heating and AC service team are actively lending their time and money to support BATP, looking forward to eliminating domestic and sexual violence through education and recovery services.

You too can help support this cause! For every 45 dollars’ worth of your donation, one adult and two children get to have a safe haven for one night.
