Jan. 30, 2012   Do I REALLY need an A/C or Furnace Check-up?

As the owner of AirCon Service Company, I am asked quite frequently if checkups on home HVAC equipment are really necessary.  I answer this question by pointing out the benefits that regular maintenance provides and let the home owner make up their own mind.

First, checkups will save you money, especially in the long, hot summers.  Many factors can affect the efficiency of your current AC unit.  Cleanliness of coils, proper refrigerant charge and leaking ductwork are examples of conditions that will rob you of your dollars when you receive your electric bill.  Checkups can also save you money by maximizing the life of your current equipment.  Would you rather replace your equipment every 8 years or every 12 years?  Check ups are geared to isolate and repair those small issues that can cause bigger problems.  This results in longer life of the equipment.

Secondly, checkups are a matter of safety.  Your HVAC system can be a danger to you and your family if it is not installed and operating properly.  It is not safe to assume that because it operated OK last year that it will be OK this year.  Mechanical parts rust or deteriorate over time.  High winds can disconnect flue pipes or furry attic visitors can chew wires or shred insulation.  Wasps working unnoticed throughout the summer can put a furnace in an unsafe operating condition.   When it comes to your families’ safety, a checkup really makes sense.

Thirdly, it’s a matter of convenience for the homeowner.  Check ups are designed to fix the small problems so a major breakdown is far less likely to occur.  I am pretty sure you don’t want your AC to break down over the 4th of July holiday when you have guests over.  Believe me; we don’t want to be at your house over a holiday either, unless it’s to sample your barbecue.

We would be happy to answer any questions you might have, so don’t hesitate to call if you need help: 281-488-HELP(4357).

Dec. 2011  It's Furnace Check-up time!

Just a reminder to be sure and have your Furnace Check up (Heater Tune up) done soon. It's the best way to know that everything is working properly and to make sure there are no leaks or any other problems that could hinder your furnace's performance. Mine is very old, but with consistent check ups each year, it's still going strong! I am hoping it may last as long as our Free Furnace winner's did-32 years! That is amazing! However, with AirCon Service Company's help, it could easily last another 10 years. When it does finally kick-the-bucket, though, I know I can trust AirCon to do a great job installing my new system for a fair price. If your system is already on its last breath, please give us a call to schedule a free proposal....

NOW is the best time of year to have you’re Heating and Air Conditioning system replaced because…

Review by Rick and Phyllis Nygren, Winners of 2011 Thanksgiving Free Furnace

After 33 years our AC/ heating unit had to be replaced.

The first time we needed a service call for our AC heating unit, we used the Yellow Pages and chose AirCon Service Company. This was many years ago, long before Angie’s List was created. The technician who came out made a minor repair and left an AirCon magnet which we’ve kept on our refrigerator.   Whenever we’ve called for service, the technicians have been prompt, efficient, and polite and took the time to explain the problem.

In fact, about 5 years ago with temperatures in the high 90s, our AC fan was working, but there was no cool air. We turned the unit off and called AirCon for an appointment later that day. We were prepared to pay a hefty repair bill or, more likely, buy a new unit. After checking out the unit in the attic, the technician turned the unit back on and it worked perfectly. He could have sold us a new unit that day. However, he was honest enough to explain that the builder had installed a unit that was too small for the square footage of the house. Consequently, the unit could not keep up with the demand during extreme high temperatures and the compressor would shut down. He wrote up an estimate for purchase and installation of the proper size unit. But he also told us that although our unit might totally fail at any time, if we had this particular problem again, we could just turn the unit off for an hour or 2 and then turn it back on. After that we only had the overheating problem 2 or 3 times per year. By following his advice and also setting our thermostat up 2 degrees, the unit lasted five more years.

Finally in September, 2011 we did have to replace our AC/ heating unit. It was 33 years old! We called AirCon again because of our past experience with the company. They gave us their recommendations, but did not encourage us to buy the most expensive unit. We would not hesitate to recommend the company.

We were later surprised and happy to learn that we were the winners in AirCon’s Thanksgiving free furnace drawing. We went to their office where we met the owner, Derek Stewart, who presented us with a check for the amount of our new furnace and a new magnet for the fridge.

July 5th, 2011  (Happy Independence Day!!!)

I hope everyone had a fantastic Independence Day and a wonderful weekend! I'm writing below to correct a BLOG post I had written last time...

We are very proud of an award we received from a popular online review website. Because our customers are happy with our service, they go online fairly often to different websites (Yelp, YahooLocal, YellowPages, and of course the one that gave us the award- it's on our homepage), and write reviews for us on their own free time- that says A LOT about the quality of service they receive from AirCon Service Company. Thank you to our customers for helping us 'get found' on internet searches when people are looking for a company they can trust!

Houston Air Conditioner Repairs, Service, and Installation

Thank you to all of our new Houston customers who have given us a try recently for A/C Repairs, Air Conditioning installation, and Air Conditioner Service! We appreciate your time and hope to be your service company of choice from now on. Our phones are answered 24 hours per day by a live person who cares about your situation. We look forward to being there for you the next time you need us. God bless you!

April 20, 2011   AirCon's Oldest Furnace Contest WINNER!!!

Oldest Furnace Contest Winners 2011AirCon Service Company proudly announces the winners of our 2011 Oldest Furnace Contest! Mark and Carolyn Smith of Friendswood won $2270.00 for allowing AirCon to replace their 28 year old furnace at the end of 2010. In addition, they received their $1500 tax rebate and the excellent service that AirCon always provides. When she received the call, Carolyn was so happy she cried! She explained that they had found out a few days ago that they needed to replace the transmission in their truck and were praying about where they would find the money to do so. AirCon to the rescue again! We are always grateful when the Lord uses us to help someone.

When asked WHY they chose AirCon to replace their dinosaur of a furnace, Carolyn answered, "Clayton!" She told me that Clayton had been their HVAC guy since before he worked at AirCon and they still call on him because of his skill and knowledge when it comes to air conditioners and heaters. Well, she MUST be right, he helped them maintain their original furnace and it lasted 28 years! Congratulations to the happy family and praise the Lord for answering their prayers about that transmission!

If anyone has an older furnace, you really should let AirCon replace it this fall with a newer, more energy efficient one. You will be amazed at what they can do now. We will start our next contest in October, so start saving now if you have an old dinosaur of your own!

April 7, 2011   I love my job!!

I really do love my job! I enjoy being able to call each of our customers after their service call and ask how things went. I get to hear some really great comments and will try to share them more often on my Facebook page:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/AirCon-Service-Company/123745210968968

I love being able to share AirCon with people who have had a bad experience with a different company. So often they are very surprised at the level of service they receive with AirCon. From the ladies who answer the phone, to our awesome techs who wear their shoe covers and clean up after they finish, we strive to be everyone's A/C company of choice!

I spoke with a gentleman today who said, "It was perfect! Leon did a fabulous job and we're looking forward to working with ya'll again in the future! We have found an A/C company that we can stick with from now on!" We were recommended to him by his wife's friend.... so that shows you the power of a good referral. He told me he'd be recommending us, too!

More and more, I am becoming a huge fan of Angie's List, too. People pay a membership fee to become a member there so they can have access to over a million different companies and doctors. Those members are faithful to write honest reviews about their experience with each company they use. That way, BEFORE YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY you can know that you are going to get good service based on what you read before you hire them. I love that! Never again will I be disappointed by a poor service company who does a bad job and then won't answer their phone if I try to get them to come back out and fix it!

That makes a huge difference!"

Just 5 days left until we can find out who will WIN $200 CASH for the month of October.

Also, only 5 days left until the $600-$1000 RUUD Rebate disappears- Aaagh! Better call AirCon and get that Furnace checked out quick!! 281-488-4357 (HELP)

Already, we've had many people get their Furnace Check-Up taken care of BEFORE they need to turn it on (the best way to do a Furnace Check Up!) It's always safer to get everything checked out ahead of time to reduce the risk of anything going wrong on the cold night you DO need to turn it on for the first time after a long summer. AirCon Service Company will tune up your furnace by inspecting the Heat Exchanger thoroughly for cracks, rust holes, or any other defects. AirCon's Service Tech will also make sure the Burners are lighting correctly to prevent it from becoming a fire hazard. We've seen flames "rolling out" of older furnaces far enough to reach combustible materials! PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANYTHING ON TOP OF YOUR FURNACE (cardboard or plastic storage boxes, the artificial Christmas tree, bags of any kind, etc) because the Furnace itself gets hot when its running and you don't want the heat to damage (or melt!) anything that's too close. Depending on the type of Furnace you have, AirCon's Technician will continue checking other aspects of your Furnace to make sure everything is satisfactory and operating within specs and within tolerance levels.

We look forward to hearing from you when you call us to schedule  your Furnace Check-Up. Call Barbara or Denise at the office: 281-488-HELP (4357) and remember, we ALWAYS CALL before we send the technician to your home, so if you are at work, you won't have to miss a whole day waiting on someone to show up!

How can I win a FREE FURNACE?

Today we are officially announcing the start of our Oldest Furnace Contest! If you live in an older home with an older furnace, this is for you! Or, if you know someone (family member, friend, or co-worker) who has been complaining about their old furnace not always keeping the house warm in the winter (remember how COLD it got last winter?), then you should tell them about this because it could save them a lot of money and heartache.

We are also giving away $200 every month until February, and the cool thing is, one of those winners will be eligible to also win the Grand Prize. Imagine the odds… if you win the oldest furnace for one month (and $200), then you will have a ONE in FIVE chance of winning the FREE FURNACE! Those are incredible odds if you ask me...

SO, be sure to call your friends, family members, and co-workers who you think may benefit from this news. If it’s you, then pick up the phone and give us a call to schedule your furnace check-up so we can get your name on the list of contenders!

CALL NOW: 281-488-HELP (4357)

I was surprised how cold it was when I opened the back door this morning...

60-something is not what I was expecting and since I have lived here long enough to become a "Texan," I quickly ran for a pair of socks! What perfect timing, though, since we are just about to start our Furnace Check-Ups at AirCon. If you are one of our Service Partner members, or an Annual Agreement member, you will receive a call from Denise or Barbara sometime soon to remind you that it's time for your Check-Up. Also, we will be announcing the beginning of our "Oldest Furnace Contest" so be on the lookout for details coming soon......

What's the best Air Filter to use at my house?

Today I’d like to remind everyone to be sure to change your air filters regularly! I’ve learned since I’ve been here that we should be changing our filters out MONTHLY. Clayton, our Operations Manager, said he is reminded to change his air filter every time he pays his electric bill.

When installing an air filter, it is important to know which way they are supposed to fit into the return grille. This is important because if they are facing the wrong direction, it can have a negative impact on air flow which reduces the efficiency of the equipment and can also reduce the usable life of the filter. The air is always being pulled into the return grille, where the filter goes, so the arrows on the filter should always be pointing INWARD and you should be able to read the words across the top of the filter if you pull it out towards you. If not, it’s backwards!  =0)

Air filters come in many different sizes and prices. The hypo-allergenic, expensive filters require more attention on your part because they trap more dirt and particles. Even though your air will be cleaner, they can ultimately decrease the efficiency of the unit when they get full of dirt and are not changed out fast enough. Therefore, you will need to monitor the build up that occurs and be ready to change them out when necessary, which could be more than once per month.

Pleated filters are adequate to filter your air and they are usually much more affordable. A washable or permanent filter may only last for the first few months and then they can gradually decrease the air flow.

According to Clayton and Wayne, our Installations Manager, the main priority is to HAVE A FILTER INSTALLED AND CHANGE IT MONTHLY. The choice is up to you if you want to spend a little or a lot, but the most important thing is to CHANGE IT REGULARLY!

Another answer to filtered air in your home may be to have a 5 inch Media Filter or an Accu-Clean System installed. These filtration systems will clean the WHOLE house very effectively. Based on what I have learned recently, I am going to have one installed at my house soon. I like the idea of only having to change out the filter once every six months or if I get the Accu-Clean, I can wash that filter and replace it once it’s dry.

If you have any questions on filter installation or choices, please give us a call:   281-488-HELP (4357)

Bad Experience with a Duct Cleaning Company for a mildew problem...

Today I want to tell you about something that happened to a friend from church. He found some mildew in one of his air vents as he was cleaning them and decided to call a “duct cleaning” company AFTER he called his AC company and they would NOT come out to help him diagnose his problem. Once he called the duct cleaning company, they came out and charged him more than $1700 to clean his ducts and get rid of the mildew, but after they left, he went upstairs in the attic to inspect their work and discovered a HOLE in a duct near the plenum, which was causing cool air to blow into the attic. He called them back out and they sent a guy who wound up taping over the hole with a small piece of tape. They left and once he assessed the situation, he called me to discuss what happened.

I was able to tell him that we don’t recommend air duct cleaning because sometimes it can create worse problems than just dirty ducts. As with his case, people often wind up with holes in their ducts and then they spend more money on their electric bill because now their AC is cooling their attic as well as their house and it runs all the time. In addition, the worst problem is when everyone in the home gets sick from having to breathe in the air that is being pulled from the dusty attic and insulation. In my friends case, AirCon was able to go out and walk through everything with him and fix the hole properly so he shouldn’t have any more problems with it. He is calling his old AC company to cancel a yearly policy with them since they weren’t even willing to come out and help him with something they should have been able to help with. Our courtesy call helped us to earn a new customer!

The lesson to be learned from this story is: PLEASE DON’T EVER HIRE A SERVICE COMPANY UNLESS YOU LOOK THEM UP ONLINE FIRST (start with GOOGLE MAPS) AND READ THEIR REVIEWS. In this case, the company who did the duct cleaning had 5 BAD reviews and one even explained how they had so many bad reviews, the BBB kicked them out! With a little research, you can save yourself a lot of trouble. Another good idea is to ask co-workers, friends and family for a referral if there is ever a service you need performed at your home. www.bnihoustoneast.com and www.AngiesList.com are great places you can look up service providers with a good reputation.

If you have ANY questions about mildew in your vents and how to prevent it, issues with duct cleaning, or anything else, please give us a call:  281-488-HELP (4357).

Air Conditioners, Furnaces (Heaters), Indoor Air Quality, Humidity in your home, Tax Credits, etc...

Hello! This is the first post on our new BLOG- yeah! I’m happy to say this will be something I get to contribute to as part of my job as AirCon’s Marketing Manager. I’ve been here since April 2010 and have seen the company grow and change a lot in that short time, even though they are already 40 years old. AirCon is a great place to work and I am very happy to be here.

Today I want to ask if you have any questions about anything related to Air Conditioning, Indoor Air Quality, Humidity in your home, Air Conditioner Repairs or Installations, How Tax Credits can help save money, Preventative Maintenance, Energy Efficiency, or even questions about a Programmable Thermostat or anything else you can think of? Because we have a Mechanical Engineer here (Derek Stewart, the owner), we can pretty much answer any question you can come up with! I will be covering a lot of these topics in the next several weeks, but feel free to start asking questions because there are probably others who have the same question you do. My email address is:   This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

We are here for you whenever you need help with your AC or Heater. We can help you with Repairs, Installations, Yearly Maintenance, Indoor Air Quality, Installation of new equipment, and Emergency Service. Our techs are available 24/7. We are just a phone call away. A real, live friendly person will answer the phone and talk to you and you won’t have to choose Option 1 or Option 2!

“At AirCon, we don’t cuss, but our customers swear by our service!”   Smile

What Your Neighbors Are Saying:

We’ve told everyone about you!

Our AC went out on a Tuesday and my husband Googled “Air Conditioning” from his phone. We called the first two companies that came up, but they didn’t answer their phones. It was 4:30pm and then we called AirCon and they not only answered the phone, they had a tech at our house that evening. Leon inspected our AC and I didn’t have the feeling he was trying to take advantage of me. He was very to the point and very friendly. We had a new condenser and coil installed because ours had finally died. The installers were hard workers and arrived on time.  We would definitely use AirCon again- I’ve been telling everyone about you!
